Marcus Jordan is the son of hall of fame basketball player Michael Jordan. Marcus plays basketball at Central Florida on a scholarship. UCF has a contract with Adidas that their players in any sport must wear adidas sportswear. Sounds pretty simple, right? Well, Marcus believes that since Nike is such a special commodity to him and his family (namely his father), the rules of the contract do not apply to him. Now, first off, I will say, in his defense, When UCF first offered him, the recruiters said that Marcus WOULD be able to wear his nike/air jordan shoes. But, once this season began, the issue arose he could not. Now, what would you do? Would you cut the contract, or cut Marcus? In UCF's case, they cut the contract with adidas. I guess Marcus Jordan meant that much to the team that the school would lose $3 million just to placate him. I'm sure his teammates LOVE him.
For the record, I would've cut his ass from the team.
Now this next diatribe is not sports-related, but thats good. Makes me seem diverse (right?). AT&T, which nowadays seems to be the cell phone service of everyone and their dog, is filing suit against Verizon for their latest "There's a map for that" commercials circulation on television and radio. Its a clever, cutesy response to the sometimes ridiculous "theres an app for that" ads boasting the iphones countless applications which seem to do everything but make money (for you, i mean. it certainly makes money for the app vendors). AT&T is claiming that it is false advertising, and that the "map" which verizon uses to portray at&t's coverage is misleading.
Ok, you are the largest cellular service in the United States, and the market leader in smart phones (that iphones a killer). Verizon legally has not over stepped their boundaries. I have to watch Vince pitch the Shamwow when it obviously does NOT do half of the things he and his beaten up hooker claims it does, so sue Vince. AT&T: boo hoo. You offer cheap, spotty service for a low price and considering that in this day and age phones do everything but make a phone call, i'll say you found your niche. Leave verizon alone, you'll sell a million iphones this quarter with or without them (by the way, i have verizon, and the service is spectacular. you know, just saying...).
The New York Yankees won the world series last night, so i guess hamels got his wish. Is it not surprising to anyone else how dominant these guys are? I mean, 27 WS champions? Is there a champion in another sport who has that many championships in said sport? I dont think the Lakers even have 20 championships in the NBA (check that, i could be wrong). 27!? Holy crap.
It does kinda make sense though, if you think about it. I mean, baseball is an extremely antequated sport. Football and basketball have evolved over the last century to be the games they are today, but baseball is still what it was 100 years ago. I guess one thing that has always had me in a tizzy about baseball is its timelessness. There's no time, just the first person to pitch 27 outs. You know, there use to be no shot clock in basketball, and no down and distance in football. The addition of those dynamics has given the two sports a unique dimension that doesn't really exist in baseball. Don't get me wrong, I'm a fan of baseball, but its no wonder that one of the oldest sports franchises in history won the championship of one of the most traditional sports of all time.
I watched a little espn yesterday, and noticed that tommy tuberville and the other clowns on that network were picking their bcs matchups. One of them caught my eye, and not in the good way. According to their projections, the fiesta bowl would host both tcu and boise state if they finished undefeated.
That doesn't intrigue me. For two reasons: A) I already saw that last year in the San Diego County Pool and Recreation Center bowl, and it was a good game, but its already happened. B) Regardless of who wins that matchup, what the f would that prove? I thought the point of having a non BCS team in the BCS bowls was to match them up against BCS teams. If TCU or Boise St won that game, who cares? That proves that one of the two teams can beat a non-BCS team, which is what they have been doing all season! And from a revenue stand point, TCU does not draw a crowd, and Boise State's rabid fans would still not be enough to fill all the seats in Glendale. I do think if both teams go unbeaten, then they both deserve to go, mainly because there is no one else from any conference that deserves an at-large bid. And no, not even Notre dame. Im so sick of hearing about how good Notre Dame is, cause they arent.
Here's my bcs matchups, as they stand right now:
BCS National Championship: Alabama and Texas. Yes, i do think that alabama will beat lsu this weekend, and ultimately beat florida in the SEC title game. And no, I dont think texas would be them.
Rose Bowl: Iowa and Oregon. Even if Iowa wins out, they wont beat out texas or the sec champion to the national championship, and they shouldnt. Oregon would steam roll them.
Fiesta Bowl: Boise State and Penn St. For boise st, it makes sense geographically/economically. Not so much for penn st., but im really having a hard time figuring out who else would go to play in this one. Penn St should finish 11-1. And I believe this might be the most even matchup in the BCS series. Boise st by a thread.
Sugar Bowl: TCU vs Florida. Once again, makes sense economically. they both have monster defenses, but who has the better offense? Honestly, I would not be surprised to see Florida come into this game let down after losing the SEC, and get stormed like Alabama did by Utah last year. And if not, I can dream, right?
Orange Bowl: Cincinnati vs GA Tech. Modern day spread vs conventional option. Hmmmmm......cincinnati wins.

Too Much
Lots of things are going on right now in the sports world. In fact, too much is, in my opinion. According to local broadcaster Norm Hitzges, sunday was the first day since 2001 that all 4 major american sports (nfl, mlb, nba, nhl) played on the same day. Found that a little hard to believe, havent done too much research into it though, so i'll take his word for it. The WS seemed promising in game 1 with the phillies taking out the yanks in NY. But since that game, the yankees are gonna cast this series into their endless list of WS borefests that carve their franchise deeper into all-time greatest sports franchises. Heres hoping Cole hamels wont cry again after the phillies lose (or win?) game 6.
NHL I dont care.
The Mavericks pissed me off in their first game of the season, especially since it was a loss to the washington wizards, one of the worst teams in the league one year ago. But after kicking the crap out of the lakers, no amount of losses can make me feel like this season is unsuccessful anymore. But.........its still football season, which means bball will have to wait.
I'll make another post later, but since i missed yesterday, im kinda double-downing right now. Later.
Also, interesting turn in the american political landscape last night. Talk about that later as well.

Integrity
Did anyone watch the flordia-georgia game saturday? I liked georgia's alternate color schemes. Those black helmets were rockin. Florida wore the same, gay monotone blue jumpsuits they always do. But among all of those uniforms, number 51 for the gators showed me something about himself on saturday. I went to the OU-Florida national championship in January, and watched Brandon Spikes talk crap all night to Sam Bradford (who is probably one of the classiest men in college football). Players talk crap, whatever. I also watched him get away with hitting linemen and receivers in the face mask with his gloved hands. That also happens, football is emotional.
However, its not emotional enough that you are wanting to inflict permanent injury onto an opposing player.
That opposing player is Washaun Ealey, Georgia RB. Get this: After an ealey carry, spikes jumped on top of the pile of players and proceeded to gouge out Ealey's eyes. Gouge his eyes out. Let me repeat that. He is caught on film with his dirty mitts extending two fingers into Ealey's face trying to gouge an opposing players eyes out of his skull. Last time i checked, that would make you blind.
What a thug. Thats not emotional....thats criminal. Thats one degree away from manslaughter. Poking away at a defenseless players eyes. Congrats, douche. You just solidified yourself as a grade-A crook. What is even more sorry is the response that this act invoked from The Lord Jesus Christ Himself, Tim Tebow. And I quote:
"I don't think that we did anything in that game that they didn't do."
Oh well, then, all bets are off! Gee, Tim, your omniscience not only blesses my ears with its sweet, majestic melody, but it also reveals your excuse to be as immature as a first-grader trying to explain to his teacher why he poured glue on another kid's face. I thought that's what God teaches us, to treat others as we would want to be treated, regardless (to an extent) of how they initially demean ourselves. Oh wait, I have to remember I'm not on ESPN, so there IS a difference between our holy father and tebow. Dude, grow up. You're 22 years old now, realize that two wrongs dont make a right.
The cheapest shot, however, was what Urban Meyer did to address the issue. Meyer has decided to suspend Spikes. For a half. Against Vanderbilt. And apparently, thats ok with the SEC. That crystal trophy is pretty shiny, isnt it. Maybe so shiny, it blinds you from right or wrong. I'm not born yesterday, i know some of the most successful programs in history were some of the dirtiest. But nowadays, there are more eyes on you. You have to hold yourself far more accountable today than you did 20 years ago. Oregon leading rusher Laugarrett (sp?) Blount punched a Boise st player in the face the first game of the season, and Ducks coach Chip Kelly suspended him for the season. Guess meyer doesnt have the testicular fortitude of Kelly. While we are on this subject, I would like to bring up a similar dispicable act that occurred earlier this season. Texas LB sergio kindle ran his drunk ass into the side of an apartment building, and couldve killed several people. Mack Brown has yet to issue a reprimand against his super defensive stud. Like i said, thats a shiny trophy.
So congratulations Florida. Today, you have shown the rest of the country your wreckless journey to the national championship is paved with eye-gouging thugs, whiny immature deities, and an irresponsible coach. Who knows, you may have even had a newly-blind athlete in your wake.

Halloween Weekend
I saw "paranormal activity" this weekend, and honestly, I was a little dissapointed. Everyone told me it was frightening and that I wasn't going to be able to sleep well the same night I saw it, etc. And yeah, it had its moments, but overall just a lot of door knocks, doors shutting, lights flicking on and off, and loud screaming. Not too impressed. Wouldnt waste another $10 to go see it. Lets talk about this weekends football games (college and some pro).
UT and OSU played in stillwater this weekend. In my initial post, I made the point that I thought both teams came into this season overrated. Still stick by that. Also I made the point that I wouldnt be surprised if OSU upset Texas, which of course, didnt happen (on a side note, i always think its funny that we try to "pick" an upset. doesnt that defeat the purpose of an upset? upsets contain the element of surprise as much as any other element within it. anyways...) Texas' defense completely owned any portion of osu's offense that ran beyond 5 yards of the LOS. I thought Zac Robinson made a lot of stupid throws, 4 of which were INT's, and only one of those that I can say were forced by heavy pressure up front. Texas' offense was....well, pathetic, to put it nicely. 275 total offensive yards. The longhorns are 39th in total offense in the country. The Cowboys are 45th in total defense. Now consider the competition each one of these teams has faced, and when all things considered, that's pretty awful. Texas' offense also only scored 27 of the 41 totals points they scored as a team in that game. Which hey, special teams and takeaways are part of the game as well, but believe me, once they get to bowl season, they're gonna face someone a little less generous at QB than zac robinson.
Now, that all being said, I think there is also something to be said for the officiating. Listen, I'm not one to blame the refs whenever a team loses or wins, and I'm CERTAINLY not one to claim that luck always follows the successful. However, there is an exception. I've watched Texas play a lot this year, and notoriously, Austin is a place where opponents find it hard to win because of the circumstances with the "usual" crew that calls the games. Apparently, that has spread beyond Austin. There were a lot of calls, particularly two in the first half, that I have a serious problem with. One was the unneccesary roughness call on OSU for laying a hit on a "defenseless" receiver after McCoy and his super precision threw the ball out of reach. The DB didn't launch himself, he didn't have helmet-to-helmet contact, so why was it called? I'm not much one for roughness calls in a football game anyway, unless its so blatant that it merits the call. Its football, it's supposed to be unneccesarily rough. Secondly was the fumble by James Kirkendoll deep in Texas territory that was so obviously recovered by OSU. The officials missed it and marked the ball as caught for a 4-yard gain. The replay officials missed it. OSU head coach Mike Gundy called a time out to discuss with the officials about the missed call, and then they conveniently relayed to him that the call wasn't reveiwable. Hmm. Texas then proceeded to march unimpeded down the field and score a touchdown with just seconds left to go in the first half, putting the longhorns up 24-7 at half. If that call had been made correctly, you would have instead seen a 17-10, maybe even 17-14 score at half. As we saw in the fiesta bowl against ohio state, Texas is not nearly as potent without big 12 officials. You cant miss calls like that. Thats why you have the job. Unfortunate.
How about k-state and ou? Holy crap, i dont know who the hell oklahoma thinks they are resting on a 28-9 halftime lead. OU is immunized in norman, but after watching that game saturday, they need to make sure they keep playing instead of sitting on a giant lead. In the first quarter, OU looked like they were gonna score 1000 points and walk away with an un-Godly victory. Instead, the Wildcats made the most of the situation, and made the 11th ranked defense in the country look like the 111th. brandon banks smashed and slashed the sooner special teams, including a 98 yard td kickoff return. Ou is showing something resembling a run game now, and Landry Jones is proving that he is the next offensive subject for the sooners (not to mention Ryan Broyles. he makes things a little easier for the frosh qb). The pass pro for OU is spectacular. The run blocking....ehhhh, not so much. But i think the big surprise of this game was Kansas State. They are up and running a lot quicker than I originally thought they were going to be with Bill Snyder. Surprisingly, they sit atop the B12 north, and will more than likely finish 8-4 and head to the big 12 championship game against (more-than-likely) texas. Im kinda scared, not gonna lie, the wildcats are improving drastically each week since that texas tech loss (66-14). They're gonna get someone big before this season is up.
Texas Tech and Kansas. The Jayhawks are outta gas. They look lethargic, they look confused, they look apathetic. Todd Reesing looks like he'd rather sit on the sideline than play. Their defense is spotty. And Mark Mangino looks hungrier and hungrier each time I see him. Yeah, that was kinda mean. Texas Tech plays defense, and really well now, too. The red raiders will probably be a lot happier when Steven Sheffield returns from his foot injury, but I must say, the next few games, I would give the ball to RB Baron Batch. Hes tough, hes fast, hes smart, and he doesnt get nearly enough touches. Also, dynamic AP athlete Harrison jeffers should see the ball more too. This game probably more than likely punched Kansas out of the Big 12 title game, barring a meltdown at the top and a late season surge by the Jayhawks.
The rest of the big 12 games......ehh, didnt really matter, so, who cares.
THE DALLAS COWBOYS! I live in the area, so yes I am a cowboy fan. I dont like the franchise, but i like the team, if you get my drift. They improved their record today to 5-2 with a nice 21-point victory over the mysteriously inept Seattle Seahawks. Romo has not thrown an interception for his 3rd week in a row. He has twelve touchdowns on the year. Miles Austin had 5 catches for 61 yards and a TD. He continues to emerge as the star target for the Cowboys. Roy Williams continues to be.....confused. The inability for Romo and Williams to ever connect on a pass or be on the same page perplexes me. The defense continues to improve, and Barbie Carpenter got his first sack, i think ever, in his career. They play Philly in Philly next sunday. The eagles just got done mopping up the giants in a 40-17 wipeout. I'll talk more about this match up in my next post. I'm getting tired.
This blogging stuff is still strange to me. Writing and talking are different. Talking is easy. You say whats on your mind, and usually, you dont have to explain a lot. Response time is also key. Writing, on the other hand, requires you to back up your claims. Thats a little harder to do. Also, response time is a non-factor (unless of course, its like 6 months later. that would be a factor). Not quite comfortable with it yet, but we'll see.

First Post
Alright, so first rule about me: I'm a late bloomer. Everything novel that everyone has been doing pretty regularly takes me about 5 years to finally catch on. Blogging is no exception.
After graduating college, I notice that I have a lot of free time. So I thought blogging would be a nice thing to take up, at least for a little bit. I like sports and politics, so that is what anyone will see on the blog pretty regularly (Sports > politics for the most part, they're at least fun).
So my first blog will be about......football. Namely college football. I am a graduate of a Big XII school, so obvioulsy I'm a Big XII guy. This weekend has a big Big XII game on its slate: Ok st and texas. Both are teams that I consider completely overrated at the start of the season. Obviously the cowboys losing to Houston in Stillwater throws up a huge red flag about how overrated they might be, but much to the pokes' defense, the cougars needed some lucky plays to pull that one out, namely the deflected pass for a touchdown in the fourth quarter by case keenum. I'm not going to excuse the cowboys, they should have won that. But, looking at Oklahoma State's season so far, its been a tumultuous one. First they lose Kendall Hunter, who is one of the best (if not the best) runningbacks in the Big XII, then DB and punt/kick returner Perrish Cox, then they lose Dez Bryant for the year because PrimeTime can't keep his business out of others' business. However, they're 6-1, thats not too shabby. Good job, Mike Gundy.
Texas, on the other hand, was the preseason favorite to win the Big XII south and the Big XII, and eventually the national championship. They come into this week's matchup undefeated at 7-0. And hey, I don't mean to crap on anyone's work.....but can Texas be any more overrated? Mack Brown refuses to play stiff nonconference opponents, they insist on playing tech EARLY to clinch a supposed-to-be-easy win over the green Red Raiders, and they re-knock out the defending heisman trophy winner (and their fans cheered that on for 5 minutes straight when it happened. hmm.) The only big 12 team that they've physically dominated was Missouri, and that Tiger team is an apple that has fallen FAAARRR from the tree. Tech and OU's defense whithered McCoy and Shipley to almost nothing, and Colorado (?) stunted their running attack to a pathetic sub-50 yard rushing game. Tech and OU also outgained Texas on offense (by about 100 yards a piece) in their respective games. So.......does Ok St have a chance to be Texas?
Well, yes.....for two reasons. A) Its in Stilly, and if that doesn't mean intimidating homefield advantage for Ok St, then at least it means Texas won't have Bible and Chrystal to rely on for slanted officiating. And B) like i said above....I just don't think Texas is that good. Over-stated defense with a shell of an offense means the Ok St has a good chance. I don't like either one of these teams, but I think there would be some silver lining to a big 12 team not going undefeated and into the national championship, because i think whoever gets thrown into that game with Alabama/Florida is gonna get killed. Yikes.
That's my first post. It was fun. I have no idea who's gonna see it, if anyone.
